Detain Marker Prototype - Painting

So here is what I'm thinking of in terms of paint.

Overall I'm pretty happy with the results. I must admit I was a bit sloppy with this but I was eager to see a finished piece. Next time I will be more patient. I think once I print with the finer detail material and make this a bit thicker, it will be pretty great!

Detain Marker Prototype - From the Printers

So this little guy arrived from the printers today

First thing I get back from 3D printing! Exciting stuff! I like it but I can already see room for improvement. First, some more pics:

So first thing I noticed is some lost detail in the runes. They got a little doughy. I think I'll use the more brittle, yet higher detail material next time. Also, it is way thinner than I expected. I'll probably make it thicker. I think I will also scale it bigger, globally. I wouldn't mind it being a little bigger. Well that's what this is all about, trial and error. Since I don't wish to use this to make a mold, I think I will go ahead and prototype the paint job too. Stay tuned!

Chandra Drawings

So I've decided I'm gonna do a little exercise. I'm gonna model, texture, and rig a Chandra. But I can't just do a realistic one. That would be cool, and I tried actually, but it's also not me. I decided to take a more stylized approach. Here is my thought process (in sketch form).

Finally I settled on this:

Now the only thing is I was planning on drawing in the armor and stuff digitally, but then the tablet I was using broke. So this is all you get for now. Anyway, gonna start modeling soon.

Detain Marker

So I'm still trying to do the whole 3D printing thing, including making a mold and casting replicas. But I figured before I do all this crazy stuff with a really complex object like the Izzet deckbox I'm working on, I better test it all on something simpler. After all, I have no idea what I'm doing.

So I came up with another Magic related item. A simple yet fun way to mark your detained permanents!

The idea is you put in on top of the card like this:

My original mock-up

So I've already sent this to the 3D printers. Once I get it back, it's time to start making that mold! The way I will paint it will also be much different. I'll give it a bit more detail so it's not just a boring white and blue.

Chicken - Turnaround

So it has finally come to this. I am pretty happy with it. Though I should probably come up with a name for him. Still a nameless chicken.

What Time Izzet?

So I decided to design a little something to be printed in 3D. I figured I want a fancy deck box for my Magic cards. The plan is to model it in 3D, send it to the 3D printers, make a mold out of the print, and then I can make resin castings. I can then paint these with acrylics. Here is what I've got so far:

Initial, super rough sketch

Earliest mock-up

Current (and likely final) design
Though the major shapes are here, it is still missing detail work such as rivets and surface texture (scratches and the like).

And it would open like so:

The top facade is still a WIP, but it is gonna be something like this:
The idea is that the valve handles will have numbers so that together they can serve as a life counter.

It has been an interesting challenge to design for 3D printing. I have to consider physical restriction that in a digital 3D space are easily ignored. I also have to consider whether or not the design will work for a mold, something I have no experience in (yet!). I'm also still trying to figure out a good way to make those valve handles move. I've got a plan but I will show it once I actually have something done. This is quite fun and I look forward to finishing the product!
